good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. so glad to have you with us. a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. hi, everyone. a few high clouds visiting the south bay. otherwise fog in oakland and san francisco. the radar not picking up any precip. we'll watch the temperatures rise through the next hour into the upper 30s in the north bay. mid and upper 40s around the coast and bay by noontime with a spare the air day. looking pretty mild again. anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees above average by the time we hit the highs for about 3:00, 4:00 this afternoon. we could see about 70 degrees in some of our north bay valleys. we'll talk about a cooldown, the possibility of rain all in the next 48 hours.

>> thank you. we're following developing news out of antioch where an amber alert has been canceled. the girl has been found safe and her suspected kidnapper is in custody. natalie calvo is back with family members this morning. police are questioning 43-year-old david douglas. they have not revealed what charges he faces. they earlier identified him as a person of interest in the girl's abduction. calvo was taken from her mother at gunpoint in front of their home on hummingbird drive around 6:45 last night. douglas allegedly followed them home from a walmart store on loan tree way. they were unloading groceries when he grabbed the girl, pointed the gun at her mother and dragged the girl to his car. a woman flagged down a passing car. >> i went to my car and honked the horn to stop the car. the car that stopped was a police officer under cover. i kept honking the horn and he

jumped out with the gun. >> we had a similar incident yesterday at the walmart where a mother was with her daughter and this individual who has been id'd is a person we have in custody, approached her daughter and also approached her and noted he worked for social services and asked the daughter to come with him. >> antioch police know douglas from previous encounters but say he is not a registered sex offender. the flu is being blamed for the death of a santa clara county woman in her early 40s. the first flu death for this season. alan wang tells us why health officials are so alarmed were the cold and flu medicine has been flying off the shelves at this cvs store. taylor kiscamp just got over the flu. >> i don't really want to describe it. >> reporter: it was that bad? >> yeah, it was unpleasant.

>> reporter: health officials believe the flu season is just getting started and the death of a 41-year-old woman along with the hospitalization of seven others here is raising red flags. >> both the woman that died as well as the cases that have been in icu, they've all been people in their 40s, 50s, fairly young people. >> reporter: the dominant strain so far this season is the h1n1 virus, also known as the swine flu, the one responsible for the woman's death on december 23rd. the centers for disease control says it hits the young and middle-aged harder than older people who may have developed some immunity after facing a similar strain in the 1940s and '50s. >> it is a cause for concern. >> reporter: many people question the vaccine's effectiveness. >> some years we take it and there's really -- we get sick anyway. other years we don't take it and it's the opposite. >> reporter: still health officials say it can reduce your

chances of getting the virus by 50% to 70%. in san jose, alan wang, abc 7 news. 25 states seen here in red on the map reported widespread flu activity last week, up from just ten states the week before. the states in orange including california have significant flu activity but only in part of the state. experts say so far it has been a typical flu season and h1n1 has been the most common strain. a new court ruling clears the way for the family of jahi mcmath to move the girl who's been declared brain dead out of children's hospital oakland. nick smith has the latest from oakland. >> because it's for my daughter. when you love your children the way i love mine, you go above and beyond. >> reporter: nailah winkfield went back to court. the judge ruled that children's hospital can remove jahi mcmath from a ventilator on tuesday at 5:00 p.m. but her family is fighting to move her before then to another

facility that will continue medical care. >> i'm just happy that i know now that the courts -- they're making it known the parents do have right. >> reporter: a 7 1/2-hour-long settlement conference laid out the steps necessary to move the 13-year-old. >> we will bring our own ventilator in. it will be a transfer to a ventilator. jahi will exit the facility. >> reporter: the two procedures needed for jahi to be transferred will not be done at children's and he isn't saying when or where they're moving her, only that it would be as soon as possible. a superior court judge okayed the move as long as jahi's mother assumes all responsibility for what happens during the transfer. she has surgery on what her family said was a routine tonsillectomy. attorneys for the hospital say the two sides reached their agreement at superior court earlier in the day. >> by the terms of that

stipulation, there is the possibility for jahi mcmath to leave the hospital and children's is committed to that stipulation. >> reporter: the clock is ticking. a federal hearing in the case is set for tuesday at 1:00 p.m. where the attorney for the family may ask the judge for an extension if jahi hasn't been moved. at children's hospital oakland, nick smith, abc 7 news. people back east are digging out from a monstrous winter storm. abc news reporter ron claiborne shows us one of the hard i.t. hit cities, boston. >> reporter: this morning, 26 states are cleaning up after a massive winter storm that broke records in some areas. the weather is being blamed for at least 16 deaths stretching from minnesota to new york state. hardest hit was foxford, massachusetts, north of boston, walloped with close to two feet of snow. >> hit the jackpot. it was a good storm. >> reporter: in quincy, massachusetts, south of boston, we found stephen whitebread, clearing the path to his front

door. heavy snow, light snow? >> light snow. pretty good. >> reporter: you don't mind? >> no. good exercise. >> reporter: even kind enough to give me a few pointers in the fine art of snow shoveling. i'm not doing it right? it's no joke, though. first, the snow and then punishing wind blanketing a huge swath of the northeast. and now bone-chilling, teeth-chattering, frost-biting subzero temperatures. chicagoland preparing for a deep freeze. single-digit temperatures are on the way as people continue to dig out. >> i guess we have to roll with the punches. >> reporter: this new jersey postal worker's route was brought to a screeching halt when his mail truck was surrounded by floodwaters. some drivers in maine braving flooding icewaters. and a group of hikers stranded on the appalachian trail. >> 5:00, it went from not sticking at all to sticking in about two minutes. >> reporter: and in new york

city, mayor bill de blasio proudly told his city -- >> 100% of primary roads have been plowed. >> reporter: the mayor himself even pitched in with some snow shoveling, experiencing what millions of people in the northeast are still grappling with. >> the east coast weather is causing another round of flight cancellations this morning. sfo reporting four arriving flights and four departing flights are canceled today. across the nation, more than 1,700 u.s. fligtds are canceled. not helping, no planes being allowed to land at sfo until 8:30 due to low visibility. you're advised to check with your airlines if you are flying this morning. happening today, activists will be rebuilding the memorial at the spot in santa rosa where 13-year-old andy lopez was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. the originally memorial burned down wednesday night and some people believe someone torched it on purpose. but fire investigators determined a candle started the

fire. at 11:00 this morning, volunteers will gather to rebuild the shrine of flowers, signs and candles vowing to make it better than before. lopez was shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy on october 22nd while holding a toy gun designed to look like an ak-47 assault rifle. in san rafael, police are investigating a fatal dump truck accident. 67-year-old olga rodriguez died at the scene. the collision happened just after 12:15 yesterday afternoon as two people crossed heatherton street near third. the truck driver told police he didn't see the people. officials say drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this accident. authorities are investigating a police shooting in san jose yesterday afternoon. we were over cape horn drive in the area, not long after the shooting around 3:30 in the afternoon. san jose police were responding

to a call of two men in their 30s fighting. they arrived to find one had a knife. police say the officer asked the man to drop it. when he refused and came toward her, she shot him. the suspect's wounds are not life-threatening. police want your help in identifying a burglar who was caught by surveillance cameras at the housing complex here. the man entered one of the apartments on nelson rising lane yesterday morning but left when he was confronted by a tenant there. witnesses say the same man was seen rattling door handles earlier. if you recognize him, you are asked to call the ucsf police department. atu union members have approved a tentative agreement with barret that ends months of heated negotiations. the barret board approved the new deal with the union thursday. it dropped the clause granting union members up to six weeks of

♪ wake up little susie >> reporter: phil and his older brother, don, amassed 35 hits over a 50-year career. those who toured with them remember him fondly. nancy sinatra tweeting, phil everly is gone, touring with phil and don was one of the thrills of my life. i love you, philip, godspeed. the influential brothers were inducted into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame in 1986. many of them were a source of inspiration including the beatles. the brothers' legacy continues to inspire musicians for generations. nora jones and billy joe armstrong released an everly brothers tribute album. billy joe tweeted, the everly brothers go back. those harmonies live on forever. we're going to miss you, phil, gratitude. ♪ bye-bye love >> reporter: everly was 74. ♪

lindsey davis, abc news, new york. blackberry is accusing a company backed by tv host ryan seacrest of being a rip-off artist. the allegations were filed in a patent infringement lawsuit yesterday. blackberry claims typo copied the smartphone maker's iconic keyboard. another sign that california could be heading for a major drought. the first snow pack survey of the year finds the snow level is just 20% of normal. that ties 2012 as the lowest ever on record for early january. >> it just reflects the fact that we've had minimal storm activity this year. we get that high pressure center built up over -- up in the pacific northwest, shifting all the storms up into canada and

then subsequently onto the east coast and there's just no water right here. >> at this rate, officials estimate they will only be able to deliver 5% of the water requested by public agencies this year. the winter snow pack provides about a third of the state's water supply. in this warm and sunny weather, a benefit to some. george warren found those who get their power from solar panels are getting a pleasant surprise as their december utility bills arrive in the mail. >> reporter: the best sales pitch the president of aztec solar can offer is his own bill for $13.33 in december, about 95% lower than last year. >> it's great, especially with christmas lights up. i had christmas lights up. and even with that, i had a $13 bill. >> reporter: typically residential solar installations around here don't do a lot of work during the winter months.

>> the sun is lower on the horizon. you get a lot of rain or clouds, especially fog. typically we don't get the benefit of all the solar. although you get some generation, you don't get what we're getting this year. >> reporter: it's no exaggeration to say that the fair weather has been a boon to the solar power industry all across c. 12:02 p.m., january 2nd, the state set a record for peak solar power production. the record 3,000 megawatts is largely a function of dramatically increased solar capacity in california. but who would have thought we'd mark a milestone like this just after new year's day? >> in july of 2012, we were celebrating the turnover to 1,000 megawatt peak in solar. here we have, we've tripled that in 18 months. >> reporter: although california desperately needs some normal winter weather, at least solar is picking up some of the load for hydropower that's just not happening right now. in sacramento, george warren,

abc 7 news. >> good news for people with solar panels. good news for people who enjoy warm sunshine. >> i know. i think we're getting over it. it's getting old. but it's sticking around. that's the high pressure, the stagnant air mass. and another spare the air day today. live doppler 7 hd, picking up a little in the way of fog along the shoreline. we have high clouds around the bay. but it's the low clouds that have been providing some problems from oakland to san francisco but that is burning off. we're looking at san jose this morning with a lot of sunshine out there. a chillty start, though, in the south bay with 41 right now. santa clara, we are looking at a spare the air day for you with the poorest air lt qua. san francisco, 46. 43 in oakland with temperatures in the mid-40s at the coast. from our roof camera, look at the cruise ship, definitely another day in paradise with low 30s for santa rosa and napa. certainly freezing temperatures in parts of the north bay.

34 in novato, fairfield, 34 with just 35 for you in concord. livermore sitting a little bit milder at 38 degrees. last check for the visibility, still an issue at sfo with an eighth of a mile. san carlos airport, a quarter of a mile. along the coast, we've had some fog. this is all going to lift within the next hour and we'll be looking at not only better visibility but mostly sunny conditions despite that spare the air today. we'll have another mild afternoon with 10 to 15 degrees above average. from the tower, you can see a little bit hazy out there. morning coastal fog. it is chilly. and the spare the air day today, that's the fifth consecutive one. cooler weather arrives for monday with increasing clouds. possibility of a few light rain showers perhaps as we go into the day on tuesday. here's our water vapor imagery. it shows how dramatic this dome of high pressure is with the jet stream and the storm track riding high to the north.

not allowing anything to move into the eastern pacific. look how hazy it is from emeryville. so the high pressure ridge allowing for a cap on the atmosphere. that's stagnant air. and the pollutants being trapped at the surface, very little mixing and very little change in the days ahead. so it is the 27th alert since november 1st. here's what's to come on tuesday. as we increase the clouds on monday, the system drops off. look how close it gets, maybe a few light showers for the northern mountains and the north coast. otherwise, by the end of the week, we're just left with the possibility of .10 inches of rain with that one paltry system. that's about howl we can muster. as we go back to high temperatures today, you'll notice that, wow, it is mild out there this afternoon. 68 in fremont as well as san jose. san francisco as much as 8 degrees above average. maybe a record up in the north bay, near 70 for parts of the north bay. a little cooler tomorrow.

an iowa science teacher conducted an experiment on himself to show how eating mcdonald's three times a day for 90 days would have an effect on you. and he lost weight. he restricted his calories to 2,000 a day. >> this isn't something to say, well, he only went to mcdonald's and ate salads. no, i had the big macs, the quarter pounders with cheese. i had sundaes and ice cream cones. >> he says his cholesterol dropped from 249 to 170. he also walked 45 minutes a day during his experiment and it's not exactly clear how many calories the teacher consumed or his level of exercise prior to

welcome back, everyone. glad you're with us. coming up on 8:30. starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> we have dense fog around the bay. it still lingers around sfo. we have offshore winds on the way and double-barrel high pressure that will work to evaporate that fog in the next hour or so. but it is a spare the air day with the worst air quality in the santa clara valleys. we'll be looking at mild numbers once again throughout the afternoon. and in fact around the bay, plenty of 60s. mid and upper 60s should be common. half moon bay, santa cruz, low to mid-60s. for livermore and concord today, we should see highs in the upper 60s.

we are looking at maybe a little bit of rain coming our way. we'll talk about it and show you that extended outlook coming up. >> lisa, thank you. following developing news out of antioch. an abducted girl is safe and the suspect being questioned by police. natalie calvo is back with family members after being rescued from a car that was parked at the antioch marina. police are questioning this man, 43-year-old david douglas. he was with her and believed to be the one who took her. calvo was taken from her mother at gunpoint in front of their home last night. douglas allegedly followed them home from a walmart store on lone tree way. they were unloading groceries when he grabbed the girl, pointed a gun at her mother and dragged natalie to his car. later a pittsburg woman recognized the car from the amber alert in the antioch marina and flagged down a very fortunate passing car. >> i looked and saw a car passing. so i flagged another car down just so -- in case anything. and luckily the car i stopped was a policeman.

>> he's currently in custody and going through an interrogation at this point. natalie is currently being reunited with her family. and this investigation obviously is in its early stages. >> police identified douglas as a person of interest in this case after a similar incident at the walmart store on thursday night. police say douglas posed as a social worker and tried to take another woman's daughter but was scared off. police say he is not a registered sex offender. tonight president obama and the first family will return from their holiday vacation in hawaii. the president is urging congress to replace the unemployment benefits that more than 1 million americans lost last weekend when congress allowed them to expire. the president wants both parties to approve a three-month extension that's already under consideration in the senate. >> when congress comes back to work this week, their first order of business should be making this right. right now, a bipartisan group in

congress is working on a three-month extension on unemployment insurance. if they pass it, i will sign it. >> on the republican side, congressman greg harper of mississippi is encouraging support for the health care initiative. it's a bipartisan bill that pays for pediatric research at the national institutes for health. happening today, a new baseball helmet to better protect pitchers from line drives is getting an endorsement from someone who knows how important that is -- gunner samburg was pitching in a high school football game in 2010 when he was hit in the hit suffering life-threatening injuries. today he'll speak to parents and others about the halo. the designers say it reduces the severity of impact by 50%. happening today, princess cruise liner has just arrived in san francisco in the past 30 minutes kicking off the 2014 west coast cruise season.

here's a look from our roof cam. she's the first of 76 cruise ships booked to berth this year, just shy of the record 85. port officials say the ships bring in major tourism dollars and pay fees that help fund local projects. a new $100 million terminal is under construction at pier 27. looking for a new best friend? the tri-city animal shelter is a good place to start. it's offering free adoptions through 5:00 p.m. today. since december 3rd, the shelter has adopted out 59 pets to new owners. another 44 have been placed with animal rescue groups and 35 others were returned to their rightful owners. at kickoff at tomorrow's niners game in green bay, technically, it will be zero degrees. but with the windchill, it's going to feel more like 25 to 45 below. hard to imagine here in california, right? we sent abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman into the deep freeze to experience it firsthand.

>> reporter: it is a hot topic around town among niner fans, the cold about to hit your team in green bay this sunday. >> gametime, 0 degrees. the windchill factor is going to be minus 20 to minus 25. >> reporter: ever wonder what that's really like? ever hear of growers refrigeration company in san francisco? >> we're going to go in here. >> reporter: this is a family operation that's been in the same place for half a century. they store food here before shipping, lots of it. how cold is this? >> well, subzero with the freezer room. maybe 10, 15 below zero. >> reporter: close to the frozen tundra that people will endure in green bay this weekend. first reaction from a native californian surrounded by frozen fish who was beginning to feel like a frozen fish himself.

do the niners ever come practice? >> they should. >> reporter: but we had the goal of spending three hours in this environment. turns out, we barely lasted three minutes. robert has worked in this place 14 years. his advice if you're going to the game? >> you don't want to put too much clothes on, then you get too hot. the% separati perspiration turn and then you're cold. go long! so back inside the freezer, numb feet and all one last time, we could not leave without the duke. where did i put it? really? in san francisco, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> meanwhile, sierra ski resorts are suffering because of the lack of snow. the only way they're surviving this winter is with their snow-making equipment. they're making snow every night

and have been able to open a couple of more runs and lifts every week. only a few inches are expected. the warm temperatures and lack of raun have farmers in the central valley tornado about their crops. winters in the san joaquin valley cause crops to grow dormant. but the ground is so dry, farmers have been forced to irrigate their crops one to two months ahead of schedule. >> every morning i wake up and check the forecast to see when we're getting ready and keep hoping and praying for it. >> chandler says farmers are also concerned the warm weather could fuel diseases and pests that could destroy their crops. the warm weather and dry conditions could have a major economic effect on the region. a game of hide and seek gone wrong. this picture says it all. a girl emerging from a washing machine after getting stuck inside. abc news reporter rena ninen has

the story. >> reporter: it started as a simple game of hide and seek and ended in a rescue operation. >> i have an 11-year-old daughter. she is stuck in the washing machine. don't ask me how. >> reporter: determined to beat her sisters and cousins, 11-year-old trinity hit inside the washing machine and was stuck. >> she was hanging out of this part right here. i could only see from about here up. and she was quite panicked. >> reporter: at first, the kids employed their own rescue tactics before notifying any adults. >> they didn't want to be in trouble. >> reporter: so the kids pretreated her, so to speak. >> they got some butter, rubbed her up with butter, put peanut butter on her. >> reporter: even a rinse cycle. >> they tried ice and then warm water. >> reporter: eventually the local fire department had to be called. >> the patient's been in there 45 minutes. she started to panic, complaining of a lot of pain, trouble breathing. now we've got to just cut her

this morning, the owner of a florida animal sanctuary is facing misdemeanor charges after a lioness dug out from our closure and escaped. she has been caught and will be returned to a cage that is secure. it happened near tampa. the lion was found in a secluded part of the property inside of a fence. federal officials said they told the sanctuary to repair the lion enclosure last february to present this kind of thij. a big detour for drivers who commute from the area from the stockton area. highway 160 is going to be closed at night all next week. it connects highways 12 and 24. it will be off limits from 8:00 p.m. till 5:00 a.m. from january 6th till january 10th. the bridge is getting a much-needed facelift. caltrans says the detour will force some commuters to drive as

much as an extra 80 miles to reach their destination. there will be signs up alerting motorists of the closure and the detours. san jose's historic landmarks commission will consider the century 21 theater as a landmark. it was built in 1964. the attached flames restaurant which used to be a bob's big boy will also be considered. a nomination would kick off the process which requires an historian to document the value of the structures and public hearings. 8:42 now, lisa keeping track of the forecast, which is the same. >> same. we do have pretty dense fog out there, especially along the peninsula and at sfo where there are airport delays. up in the north bay, some patchy fog. below 1,000 feet and plenty of sunshine to come. then things change. i'll be back with the accuweather seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, lisa.

evaporating for the most part. 60s forecasted but we have an offshore flow allowing for some of that fog to linger and we are looking at sunshine in the south bay. with a few high clouds it's been cool, so you were clear overnight. right now, 41 degrees, looking at the poor air quality for the entire bay area. but around san jose, around santa clara, that's where those particulates will form at the surface. and another spare the air day. 45, half moon bay with some fog. 44 in oakland. from mt. tam, you can see the haze right there. look at the freezing temperatures. 31 in santa rosa. still just at freezing in napa. 36, novato. mid-30s for concord. livermore sitting at 38 degrees. here's a look at the visibility in miles with the airport down to an eighth of a mile and a quarter of a mile at the san

carlos airport as well. elsewhere, not bad. doing a little bit better in oakland. a little bit more moisture in the atmosphere this morning. you can see the haze from our camera here. coastal fog, it is chilly, of course, for the next several hours. by the afternoon, numbers once again well above average with a big ridge of high pressure dominating our area. but that ridge will give way to some cooler weather and a couple of areas of low pressure will be visiting us next week bringing a few opportunities for rain. but right now, it's all about high pressure as it continues to build into the east of us. and with that upper level high, we get the offshore winds. the santa ana winds in southern california. so some problems there. but look at the jet stream. it is pushing the storm track well to the north. and this is more like a summertime scenario. here's how cold it is across the nation and it's going to get even colder. you see where the pink is. that's where we have just 0 in

fargo. and a weather system will continue to allow that arctic air mass to sink further south. tomorrow, it's the niners with at not only the coldest air of the season but dangerously cold windchill. anywhere from 25 to 45 degrees below zero. and at 3:40, just 1 degree. by the end of the game, minus 4. so it is really going to be dangerously cold there. and we'll look for temperatures today once again not changing too much with 66 in oakland. 68 in fremont as well as santa cruz, half moon bay with that fog lifting, 65. perhaps a 70 in cloverdale. the accuweather seven-day forecast, spare the air day today. a few degrees of cooling, less fog tomorrow. the clouds increase on monday, tuesday and wednesday, possibility of a few showers. so not a lot of rain but at least the high will go away for a while during the middle of the week. >> speaking of not highs but lows, we know the niner game is going to be crazy cold, like

they are the first teams to play on an ice surface decorated with paint. the thunder recently invited fans to come onto the ice, paintbrushes in hand and put their mark on the rink. they plan to keep the colorful ice for the rest of the season. the bowls won the game 4-2. next, a man who won part of the second largest lottery jackpot in history finally comes forward. why it took him so long to realize [ female announcer ] wherever morning brings you, bring the energy you need.

the winning numbers from last night's megamillions draw. 22, 24, 25, 40 and 70. the meganumber is 5. and one lucky ticket purchased in tennessee did get all six numbers. winning the first jackpot of the new year. speaking of jackpots, a man who won part of the second largest lottery jackpot in history took a long time to claim it because he forgot to check it. he purchased the ticket two weeks ago in san jose.

then he set it on his dresser and went on vacation. got back, suddenly woke up at 3:00 in the morning remembering that he bought the tickets. checked them, saw the winning numbers. he woke up his wife, told her the good news and promptly quit his job as a delivery driver. >> he said that he called his boss and left a message that went something like, i'm really sorry, boss, i hit the jackpot, i don't think i'm going to come in today, tomorrow or ever. >> a lot of bosses must hear that. he splits the jackpot with another winner in georgia and the owners of jenny's gift shop were awarded $1 million for selling tran that winning ticket. congrats to him and to us on another beautiful day that we don't need. >> yeah, got to take it. certainly don't need it. but a spare the air day today. looking at more mid and upper 60s around the bay. still some fog along the redwood shores there, also the san mateo coast, san carlos, 68.
